Overview
This course describes the principles underlying LED and lamp product eye-safety as must be applied by anyone working with today’s generation of high brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs) and solid state lighting based luminaires, lamps and signals. The course is suitable to engineers and technicians working in the field of lamp and luminaire design especially those containing high-brightness LEDs and arrays.
Background
We are all nowadays familiar with the potential hazard posed by the use of lasers inside and outside the workplace, and that stringent steps usually need to be taken to protect people from the eye hazard. Less understood though is that light emitting diode (LED) based products can also pose an eyesight hazard and so similar steps need to be taken to protect people both in the workplace and from end-user products.
Who Should Attend
This course is of interest to people working with and responsible for the safe design and use of high brightness light sources and lighting based products:
- Scientists, engineers and technicians working with high brightness light sources
- LED lamp and luminaire product designers
- Health and safety experts with a product safety and risk assessment remit
Applications fields and industries include:
- Solid state lighting
- High brightness Displays
- LED signals and arrays
- Healthcare and medical devices
- Automotive lighting
- Architectural lighting
- LED instrumentation
Course details
The course is delivered through the Photonics Cluster (UK) and is located at the Solid State Lighting Research Centre in Aston Science Park, Birmingham. The course can be hosted on your site as may be necessary and convenient for your workforce and lighting design team.
Dr Neil Haigh is a freelance optical physicist and consultant with extensive industry based experience in optics and photonics related product development and design, including safety and quality assurance testing. He holds a PhD in Applied Optics from Imperial College, London.
In addition to his industrial work, Neil has over 5 years experience with one of the UK’s leading providers of training in optical technology, where he held lead responsibility for the development of bespoke training courses in various advanced photonics fields including fibre optics, optical communications, and laser and LED product safety. Neil is the author and inventor of the popular Laser-Bee laser safety software program and a regular invited speaker at international conferences and events, particularly in the area of LED safety. Neil currently has a strong interest in the exciting and rapidly expanding field of solid state lighting.
