Arden Photonics & Aston University

Photonics Cluster clients secure awards at largest ever West Midlands ICT Conference. The regional ICT awards turned out to be a winning night for those connected to Aston Science Park.

Science Park occupiers Arden Photonics and Aston University have won a prestigious award for their joint development project of the Modcon Mode Controller, a device which tests the capabilities of optical fibre communication systems.

Technology transfer was the theme with Arden Photonics and Aston University securing the Best Knowledge Transfer award at the ICT Excellence Awards 2008, held at Birmingham Motorcycle Museum.

The joint development project between Aston University's Photonics Research Group and Arden, based at Aston Science Park was part of the University's successful Knowledge Transfer Initiative which encourages links between the University and regional business.

David Robinson, Managing Director at Arden Photonics, said: ‘The Modcon device is unique, as no other company in the world manufactures mode control units that comply with ISO safety standards, making Arden’s unit a world-leading device. We're delighted to be honoured with this success. As a result, Arden Photonics will gain increased recognition for its vital work within the ICT industry, whilst a higher profile will trigger more product sales.’

Dr Kate Sugden, Senior Lecturer of the Photonics Research Group at Aston University, commented, ‘Aston University has a well-deserved reputation for its highly successful knowledge transfer activities with regional companies and we’re pleased that this award will raise our profile still further.’

Alex Clarke, Aston Science Park's Photonics Project Manager advised, "Arden Photonics is a member of the Aston Science Park's Photonics Cluster whom continually strives to innovate and access technology expertise We are delighted for Arden's recognition in the industry and look forward to working with David's team on developing their future innovations."
