Photonic technology connects the world because photons have become the principal medium for voice and data communications, whilst CDs and DVDs have replaced magnetic recording methods for large volumes of data. Today, modern medical advances are inconceivable without harnessing the power provided by specialised optical technologies.

Photonics is a critical enabling technology – the underpinning science for which numerous applications have only just begun to be identified. While many considered the 20th Century to be the era of the electron, it is widely believed that the 21st Century will be considered the century of the Photon and consequently Photonics. Technology observers around the world have concluded that the photonics industry is reminiscent of the fledgling microelectronics industry during the 1960s when some of the base technologies were in place, but the far-reaching impact of worldwide applications was only just beginning to be felt.
