Improving the interface between science base and industry

The photonics academic research community has an impressive reputation in the UK. For this to grow the economic value to the regions and the country as a whole, there needs to be enhanced mechanisms for capturing the research outcomes and transferring them to industry and exploitation routes. To date the UK has not been able to capture value at the university/industry interface due to a perceived culture gap:

Industry members often assume that, when approaching a University or RTO, their technical needs are only to be supported by long term research programmes, but fail to recognise that the expertise most often exists, with the research already done.

The R&D Collaborative Partner Programme run by the Photonics Cluster (UK) was set up to solve these issues and signpost both Academia and Industry to the correct sources of opportunity.
