Photonics is impacting so many industries and technologies today that being a part of its development is of strategic importance to any nation and to any region with the foresight to embrace its market economy.

The UK has an impressive heritage in photonics development and the Photonics Cluster (UK) has been at the very heart of shaping the conditions to create that position.

Today, the photonics market continues to show remarkable growth in the commercial economy, as well as being a key driver for academic and industrial innovation. This is an activity that we very much support through our R&D Collaborative Partner Program, bringing technical and commercial partners together as consortia in grant funded projects.

Photonics is about technologies that manipulate light (the photon), radiation, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical means; this includes components such as lasers, fibre optics, electro-optical instrumentation and sophisticated nano-photonic systems for looking into the smaller universe.

The UK has great credentials in ingenuity, innovation and research towards smaller, cheaper, lighter and faster components, and products with greater functionality and often, lower energy requirements.

The Photonics Cluster (UK) has witnessed some extraordinary new advances over the past five years in Aerospace, Automotive, Bio-Medical, Electronics, Energy, Communications and other sectors.
